Choosing God First

Last year, I worked at a university as a receptionist for various summer school events. During that time, I built meaningful connections with students and teachers and by the end of the season, I felt inspired to pursue a similar role this year. So, when Easter came around, I began applying to different summer school positions. I had an interview for one of my top choices in June, and it went really well! However, when the offer came through, there was a change in the offer. The offer was at a different location than I had applied for and required me to work six days a week—including Sundays.

 I took time to consider the offer carefully. Missing church services on Sunday was not a good decision for me for six weeks due to my commitment in Church. I decided I couldn’t accept a role that would prevent me from attending church on Sundays. So, I reached out, politely declining the revised offer and asked if I could be considered for the original role that didn’t require working on Sunday. I knew this decision might mean giving up the opportunity altogether, but in my heart, I knew it was important to prioritize God first according to Matthew 6:33 (But seek ye first the kingdom God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you)

After what felt like a long wait, the organization got back to me—and to my delight, they offered me the initial role that didn’t require Sunday shifts. The joy and peace I felt were unmistakable, and I knew that choosing to put God first had made all the difference. I immediately accepted the role. As I prepared for my new role, I checked to see if the church I currently attend had a branch nearby, hoping to stay connected with my faith community. To my surprise, it did! I hadn’t realized this when I initially asked to be offered the first role, but it felt like confirmation that I had made the right choice.

I arrived on Sunday morning to start my new job, and in one of my first conversations with the manager, he mentioned he’d heard good things about me. Then, to my amazement, he added that since it was a Sunday morning, I didn’t need to be on-site right away and could attend church, returning later for a brief meeting. I headed straight to church, feeling an overwhelming gratitude for the clarity and wisdom that had guided me to put God first.
